Our water conservation and management initiative, 'Project Jal Kavach', aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which emphasize the importance of sustainable water resource management for the well-being of communities and the environment. In Hindi, ‘jal’ means water; while ‘kavach’ means a shield and symbolizes protection. Our water initiative is in line with Glenmark’s commitment of achieving the ESG goal of becoming water neutral by 2025.
Access to clean and sufficient water is essential for the well-being and empowerment of communities. In partnership with our NGO partners in the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in India, we implemented Project Jal Kavach in more than 40 villages in the districts of Nashik, Aurangabad, Raigad in Maharashtra, and the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. This is a significant initiative aimed at creating additional water storage capacity by rejuvenating water bodies in the region; thereby positively impacting the local villages.
Among the completed activities are the building of check dams, gabion structures, farm ponds, recharging of bore wells, construction of recharge shafts, widening and deepening of riverbeds, as well as desiltation of percolation tanks, ponds, and minor irrigation tanks.
By providing these water resources, we aim to alleviate water scarcity, including drinking water, and improve the lives of our supported communities. Project Jal Kavach will also benefit a significant number of farmers, who will see an increase in assured seasonal irrigation coverage. Better crop yields will ensure improved livelihoods for the farming community post the monsoons.
